EWT
EWT is a Dutch wind turbine manufacturer specializing in the development, installation, and maintenance of medium-sized wind turbines. The company offers comprehensive service solutions for the operation of wind turbines, with a focus on sustainability and maximum energy yield.
The Challenge
Our client, EWT, handles the maintenance and assembly of wind turbines in the Netherlands. For these heavy-duty bolted connections, they use Alkitronic electric nut runners. In wind turbines, the rotor blades are mounted to the rotor hub. The space between each bolt/nut connection is very tight, which can create a support issue. Support is necessary to be able to loosen or tighten a nut.
The Solution
With this information in hand, we got to work and, in consultation with our supplier, tackled the problem. Alkitronic is known for its tools for heavy-duty fasteners and also supplies specialized accessories for this purpose.
To resolve this support issue, a custom-made sliding support arm—designed specifically for this application—was engineered. In combination with the EFCip60 nut runner, which has a working range of 250–2,450 Nm, this provides an excellent solution. This allows the nut runner to dissipate its reaction forces and effortlessly achieve the required torque.
Result
By customizing the tool, the user can work much more efficiently and quickly. In short, it saves time and offers ease of use—advantages that are particularly valuable at high altitudes. A support arm designed specifically for a particular application can make all the difference—not only in the wind turbine industry, but also in various other industrial applications, such as the automotive, building, and construction sectors.
